A music educator for over 10 years and a performer for over 20, Dr. Watson has continued to pursue a life dedicated to the study of music. In performance, Dr. Watson has received numerous press accolades, in Le nozze di Figaro, he “uses his bright baritone to winning effect,” and “brings such passion to cheering [audiences] all over.” In a recent performance of Glory Denied, composer Tom Cipullo commented, “I thought your performance was splendid in every way - well sung and so deeply expressive.” In opera, Dr. Watson has appeared in an ever-growing list of works from Mozart to Puccini. When he is not falling in and out of love as Marcello from La bohème, he plays matchmaker for his friends as the resourceful Figaro in Il barbiere di Siviglia, or as the loyal, yet cowardly Papageno from Die Zauberflöte. His other opera credits include Peter in Hänsel und Gretel, Zuniga in Carmen, and the Harlequin from Ariadne auf Naxos. Dr. Watson has also appeared on stages around Italy where he trained with the Oberlin in Italy and Opera in Concert programs. Most notably, he portrayed Marcello in La bohème at the Teatro Signorelli in Cortona, Italy. He also appeared in NEC’s production of Le nozze di Figaro as Count Almaviva. Dr. Watson also continues to expand his concert and oratorio repertoire. He “struck a balance of beauty and strength” in Carl Orff's Carmina Burana, was “an authoritative presence” as Simon in Haydn’s The Seasons, and recently was the baritone soloist in Faure's Requiem. He has also appeared as a soloist in Mozart’s Requiem, in Handel’s Messiah, and in Brahms’s Ein deutsches Requiem. As an educator, Dr. Watson has helped numerous students reach their artistic goals, whether preparing for college auditions, giving a recital, or auditioning for a choral solo. He founded USC’s inaugural Liederabend program, creating performance opportunities for undergraduate students at the university. Dr. Watson received his Bachelor’s degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music, his Master’s from the New England Conservatory, and his Doctorate at the University of Southern California, where he specialized in musicology, opera direction, and choral conducting. He is a winner of the Rhode Island Civic Chorale & Orchestra’s 11th Annual Collegiate Vocal Competition, and appeared in Boston Midsummer Opera’s production of La Cenerentola.
